The experience

The drive from Geneva takes about an hour through the French Alps valleys before you reach Chamonix, the site of the 1924 Winter Olympics. Once there, the day splits into your choice: Aiguille du Midi sits at 3,862 metres and is reached by cable car, with a snack bar and restaurant at the summit where you can eat surrounded by panoramic views of the Alps. Bring a winter coat: temperatures drop to around minus 10 degrees Celsius even in summer. Alternatively, the red Montenvers train, a cog railway that opened in 1909, climbs just over 5 kilometres to 1,913 metres, where Mer de Glace glacier spreads across 32 square kilometres. You can walk inside one of its ice caves and look out over the 12-kilometre length of the glacier.

Those who prefer a slower pace can spend the day in Chamonix itself, shopping in the town centre or dining at traditional French restaurants. The air-conditioned SUV or minivan stays with you throughout, and you're picked up from your hotel lobby and returned there at the end of the day. WiFi is available on board.
