Climb to the Alps in the morning, walk Geneva's landmarks in the afternoon

This eight-hour tour from Geneva combines a coach ride to Chamonix village with views of Mont Blanc—Europe's highest peak—and an optional cable car ascent to Aiguille du Midi, followed by a guided city tour of Geneva's international quarter, old town and waterfront. A live English-speaking guide leads groups of more than ten; smaller groups travel with a driver-guide. The cable car option is not available for children under three, and a valid passport is required.

  • Discover Chamonix village streets
  • Board bus back to Geneva
  • City tour of Geneva international headquarters
  • Photo stop at Broken Chair and UN entry

The Experience

The day starts with a coach ride from Geneva toward Chamonix, where you'll walk the charming alpine village streets and stand in front of Mont Blanc. If you've chosen the cable car option, you'll ride up to Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 meters—a vantage point where, on clear days, you can see across the French, Swiss and Italian Alps toward the Matterhorn. The cable car itself is the access; what you do there is stand at the viewpoint and take in the scale of the range around you. If the site is open, there's an optional experience called "Step into the Void," a glass platform that extends over the mountainside. After Chamonix, you board the bus back to Geneva.

The second half is a city tour on foot and by mini train (weather dependent). You'll see the Palais des Nations, the headquarters complex at the heart of Geneva's international district, and stop for photos at the Broken Chair Sculpture, a monumental art piece near the UN entrance. The old town walk or mini train takes you through Calvin's quarter and past the Cathedral of Saint Peters, then brings you to the Jet d'Eau—the fountain that shoots water 140 meters into Lake Geneva and is the city's most recognizable landmark. The tour ends at your starting point.

Is this one for you?Choose the cable car option if you want to see the Alps from above; skip it if you prefer to stay in the village and focus on the Geneva city landmarks. Either way, the eight-hour structure fits a full day without requiring you to arrange transport between Chamonix and Geneva or navigate the city on your own.

Top questions

Can I ride the cable car to Aiguille du Midi if I'm traveling with young children?

The cable car option is not available for children under three years old. Children aged three and older can ride if they're comfortable with heights; the operator does not recommend it for children under five or for anyone with heart complaints or serious medical conditions.

What is Mont Blanc and why is it on this tour?

Mont Blanc is the highest peak in Europe and dominates the Chamonix Valley. The tour includes time in Chamonix village to see it and admire the surrounding mountains; the cable car option lets you ascend to 3,842 meters for a panoramic view of the Alps from above.

Do I need a passport for this tour?

Yes, a current valid passport is required on the day of travel because the tour crosses into France.

What happens on the Geneva city tour part of the day?

You'll visit the Palais des Nations in the international quarter, stop at the Broken Chair Sculpture for photos, walk or ride a mini train through the old town past Calvin's quarter and the Cathedral of Saint Peters, and see the Jet d'Eau fountain on Lake Geneva.

Which purchase option should I choose if I want to see the Alps from the cable car?

Choose "Chamonix, cable car and Geneva" or "Cham.-Cable car -Geneva-boat" (which includes a boat ride on Lake Geneva instead of the mini train). The other two options—"Chamonix City Tour Geneva/Boat" and "Chamonix village and Geneva"—do not include the cable car.
