Take the reins of a dog sled through the Arctic dark

A three-hour husky sledding tour in Kiruna where you ride a shared sled pulled by 12–14 Alaskan Huskies through the Poikkijärvi Woods, then feed the dogs and warm up by a fire hut. The kennel sits 17 kilometers outside central Kiruna, and free pickup from your hotel is included. Guides speak English, Spanish, Italian, French and two additional languages.

The experience

Three hours starts at the sled dog kennel, 17 kilometers outside Kiruna's main tourist area. You'll be collected from your hotel at no extra charge and brought to the warming hut to change into insulated overalls, boots and gloves: the operator supplies them, though layering underneath helps when temperatures drop below minus 30 Celsius. Then you head into the Poikkijärvi Woods, where a shared sled seats four passengers and one guide steers the team of 12–14 Alaskan Huskies. You sit back and ride, watching the landscape pass and listening to the runners on the snow. If conditions align, moose or reindeer sometimes appear on the route.

After the run, you feed the dogs chunks of meat, their favorite winter snack, and can help secure them if you want to. The group then moves to the cosy fire hut, where you sit around an open wood fire with warm coffee or tea and snacks. This is where the pace slows and the cold releases its grip.

The kennel operates with guides trained in five languages and a reputation for putting the dogs' welfare first. Reviewers often call the animals the heart of the experience. The operator asks for your body weight when you book, so they can balance the sled load. Children from age six are welcome, though the extreme cold and sled motion mean the tour is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns, or for pregnant travelers.
