You help train the dogs before you ride alongside them

This activity in Kiruna combines meeting 70 Alaskan Huskies at a working kennel with hands-on dog team preparation and an ATV ride alongside the dogs during their pre-season training. The experience runs 1.5 to 3 hours depending on group size and includes a live guide in English, Spanish, French or German, plus tea, coffee and snacks served over an open fire. Children from age 6 can meet the dogs. Only children 8 and older can ride the ATV for safety reasons.

The experience

You start by meeting the 70 Alaskan Huskies at the kennel and learning about each dog's personality and strength. The guide walks you through daily life in a sled dog operation and how the team works through the cold arctic winters. If you want, the dogs (described as energetic and eager), will give you hugs. Then you help prepare a small team of 8 to 10 dogs for training, getting a real sense of what goes into readying them for work.

Once the team is ready, you sit on a powerful ATV and ride alongside the dogs while they run, watching how they're trained during the pre-season. After the run, you help remove the harnesses and reward the dogs with meat for their work. The whole experience (from meeting the dogs to the ATV ride to the reward) takes between 1.5 and 3 hours. Tea, coffee and sweet snacks are provided over an open fire, so you have time to settle in and talk with the guide about what you've seen.

A live guide leads the activity in your choice of English, Spanish, French or German. Private transportation is included, and you'll need to dress for weather, dog hugs and forest trails. The kennel can accommodate requests for different starting times if the set times don't fit your schedule.
