The Experience
I almost lost a glove before we even started — fumbled it right into the snow while trying to wriggle into the thick boots they gave us. The air had that sharp, cold bite you only get in northern Sweden, and my breath hung like little clouds. Our guide, Anna, just grinned and handed me an extra pair. She introduced us to the dogs one by one — I still remember how soft their ears were, and how they leaned in for scratches like old friends.
Getting harnessed up was more chaotic than I’d pictured. The huskies barked and yipped, tails wagging so hard I thought one might take off without us. Anna showed us how to stand on the sled runners — “don’t let go,” she said, half-joking but also not. And then suddenly we were moving, gliding fast over packed snow between pine trees. It was quieter than I expected except for the runners hissing and the dogs’ paws thumping. At one point we saw a deer dart off through the trees — blink and you’d miss it.
Afterwards, we helped feed treats to our team (one of them tried to eat my mitten) and walked through the kennel to meet the rest of the pack. My fingers were stiff from cold but there was this smoky smell from the open fire in their grillhut that made everything feel warmer. We sat around with mugs of coffee and a homemade stew that tasted way better than anything I could’ve cooked myself — maybe it was just being out there in all that quiet. I still think about that view from behind the sled sometimes; it’s different when you’re really there, you know?
