The experience

The air felt warm and salty as we stepped out of the cruise port, classic St. Lucia morning, with that hint of seaweed in the breeze. Our driver was already waiting for us at the port, holding a small sign. He greeted us with a quick smile and handed over chilled bottled water, which honestly hit the spot after the ship’s dry air.

The ride to Vigie Beach took maybe ten minutes, tops. We passed by a couple of fruit vendors setting up their stalls. One was slicing open fresh mangoes right on the curb. The van’s AC was strong (thank goodness), but you could still catch snippets of reggae from passing cars when we stopped at lights. Our driver pointed out a shortcut locals use to avoid traffic near the airport runway. It’s those little things you only hear from someone who lives here.

Once we got to Vigie Beach, our driver asked what time we wanted picking up or said just call when ready: super chill about it. The sand here is pale and soft, not crowded at all compared to other spots I’ve seen on the island. There’s this faint smell of grilled fish coming from a shack at the far end. If you’re hungry later, that’s where you wanna go. Wheelchair users and families with strollers had no trouble getting down to the sand. I noticed ramps and plenty of space along the walkway.
