The experience
The drive-in volcano at La Soufrière is the centerpiece: you descend into a collapsed volcanic crater where sulfur springs bubble up and steam plumes rise from the ground. The guide explains the geothermal activity as you walk through, and if you choose, you can soak in the hot Black Water Pool for a small additional fee. The volcano sits in the historic town of Soufriere, once the island's capital during French colonial rule.
The route follows the scenic west coast road and includes a stop at Marigot Bay, often called the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean and a former film location. You'll see the Gros Piton, one of the twin UNESCO peaks that rise from the water. A short walk through rainforest vegetation leads to Toraille Waterfall, where you can swim in the natural pool or simply watch the water fall. The tour passes through quaint fishing villages and stops at a local bakery in Canaries to sample warm Creole bread fresh from the oven, then continues through a banana plantation where you can taste fruit picked from the tree.
The minivan holds a small group, which keeps the pace unhurried and lets the guide tailor stops to what interests you. Refreshments include water, soft drinks, local beer and homemade rum punch, along with snacks throughout the day. The tour ends with a drive through Castries, passing the lively market, the historic cathedral and Derek Walcott Square, then up Morne Fortune to view the Governor's Victorian residence before returning to your hotel or ship.
