The Experience

I’d been to Rodney Bay before, but honestly, I never knew where locals actually ate. This time, I signed up for the Rodney Bay food tour mostly out of curiosity (and maybe hunger). Our guide, Marlon, greeted us with this big grin—he grew up just a few streets over and seemed to know everyone. First stop was a tiny spot I’d walked past a dozen times. The smell inside—kind of nutty and sweet, hard to pin down—made me realize how much I’d missed just sticking to the main strip.

Breakfast was something called “bakes” with saltfish. I tried saying it in Creole; Marlon laughed and gave me a high five anyway. We wandered between stops, passing painted walls and little shops with music floating out—someone’s radio playing soca at 10am. At one point we ducked into an art place where the owner handed us cups of some seasonal juice (I think it was soursop? Still not sure). There was this moment where everything just slowed down—the heat outside, the cool tile under my feet, the taste of cinnamon from the next snack.

By the time we got to the homemade spice rum tasting (only for 18+, heads up), I felt like I’d finally started to “get” Rodney Bay. Not just the food, but how people talk here—quick jokes, easy smiles. The tour is only a few hours but it felt longer in that good way. We finished somewhere near the water; Marlon told us a story about his grandmother’s cooking that made everyone laugh. Even now I still think about that first salty bite of breakfast and how much more alive everything tasted when someone local showed you around.

What’s included
