The Experience

I never thought I’d be brushing city dust off my sleeves at sunrise and then, just hours later, squinting through the haze for a leopard’s tail in Yala. The drive from Colombo is long enough to make you question your life choices around 6am — but our driver, Suresh, kept us awake with stories about his childhood here. He pointed out roadside stalls selling king coconut (we stopped for one — it’s sweet, almost grassy) and laughed when I tried to pronounce “thambili.” There was a moment when we left the last town behind that the air changed; it smelled like earth after rain even though the sky was clear.

The actual jeep safari felt less like a tour and more like being dropped into someone else’s world for an afternoon. Our guide — I think her name was Malini — had this way of spotting animals before anyone else saw them. She’d tap the side of the jeep quietly and just nod toward some impossible patch of grass. We saw elephants first (huge, silent), then peacocks strutting along muddy tracks. I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside myself, honestly. When we finally saw a leopard stretched out on a low branch (just for a second), everyone forgot to breathe. The wind picked up and carried this dry, spicy smell from somewhere nearby — maybe wild curry leaves?

Lunch was simple: rice & curry under a faded awning by the park entrance. It tasted better than anything I’ve eaten after sitting in traffic back home. Suresh ate with us and told us how sometimes he sees sloth bears near the lagoon but “only if they’re in a good mood.” He winked at me when I asked if that was true or just for tourists. After that, we piled back into the jeep with sticky hands and sunburnt noses. The ride back to Colombo felt different — heavier somehow — like we were carrying something invisible with us now. I still think about that moment when everything went quiet except for birdsong.
