The Experience

The alarm went off before sunrise, and honestly, I almost hit snooze. But by 4:15 AM, our driver was already waiting outside the hotel in Tissamaharama—no time wasted. The air felt cool and smelled faintly of wet earth from last night’s drizzle. We drove through quiet streets, passing a lone tea vendor setting up his cart under a flickering bulb. By the time we reached the park’s ticket office, there were only a couple of other jeeps ahead—our guide grinned, “We’re always early for the best chance at leopards.”

Waiting at the gate until six, you could hear peacocks calling somewhere in the dark. Once inside, the first two hours were all about tracking leopards. Our guide pointed out fresh paw prints on the sandy track—he said they’re most active before it gets hot. We held our breath every time he slowed down near thick bushes or rocky outcrops. Didn’t spot one right away, but that’s part of the thrill. Later on, we saw spotted deer grazing close to the road, a couple of crocodiles sunning themselves by a muddy pool, and even caught sight of an elephant munching quietly behind some trees.

By mid-morning, it was getting warm and dusty—the kind that sticks to your skin—but our guide handed out cold water and fruit from a cooler in the back. The picnic lunch was simple but hit the spot after hours of bouncing around in the jeep. Around 11 AM, we headed back toward the gate, tired but buzzing from everything we’d seen (and heard—those birds don’t quit). Back at the hotel before noon, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once all morning.
