The experience
You get picked up from your hotel before the safari departs: either the early morning slot at 6am or the afternoon one at 3pm, whichever suits your schedule. The tracker drives a 4x4 jeep off the main tracks to avoid crowds and reach the places where animals actually gather. Udawalawe reservoir draws elephants, water buffalo, peacocks, crocodiles and dozens of bird species. The park's layout means most animals move freely across the open terrain where the jeep can reach them. The tracker knows which spots hold animals at which hours and navigates the terrain to maximize sightings without disturbing them.
The safari itself runs three hours once you enter the park. You'll cover ground in the jeep, stopping when animals appear or when the tracker spots signs worth investigating. At the end, you get a king coconut refreshment before heading back. Hotel drop-off is free within 8 kilometers of Udawalawe. If your accommodation is further away (in Hikkaduwa, Mirissa or Galle), transport back is available for an additional fee. The tour includes bottled water and the jeep with driver. You bring a camera, binoculars or anything else you want for wildlife watching.
The entrance ticket choice matters: you can buy it as part of this booking, or if you already have one or prefer to arrange it separately, you book the safari without it. Either way, the tracker and jeep are included, and the pickup timing stays the same. Bring sun protection, a hat and layers: mornings are cool and afternoons can be hot, and you're exposed in the open jeep.

What animals am I likely to see on the Udawalawe safari?
Udawalawe National Park is known for elephants, water buffalo, peacocks, crocodiles and numerous bird species. The tracker knows where these animals congregate around the reservoir and takes the jeep to those spots, though sightings depend on the time of day and season.
Do I need to book the entrance ticket now, or can I buy it separately?

What time does the safari start, and can I pick the morning or afternoon slot?
Safaris depart at 6am or 3pm daily. You're picked up 15 minutes before departure from your hotel, or you can meet the jeep at the park entrance. Let the operator know which time works for you when you book.
