The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the dust — that soft, dry scent that clings to your clothes and hair when you’re bouncing around in the back of a jeep. We’d left Ella behind just before noon (our driver, Nimal, showed up right on time at the guesthouse gate), and by the time we reached Udawalawe it was all golden light and heat shimmering off the road.
