The Experience
The air felt cool when we met our driver just outside Udawalawe National Park, the kind of early morning breeze that carries the smell of damp earth and wild grass. Our guide, Sunil, greeted us with a quick grin and handed out chilled water bottles before we climbed into the open-top jeep—no crowds, just our small group and the sound of birds waking up somewhere in the trees.
Within minutes of entering the park, we spotted a herd of elephants lumbering through the tall grass near a muddy waterhole. Sunil slowed down, letting us watch as one young calf splashed around while its mother kept a close eye on us. He pointed out fresh tracks in the red dust—he could tell by their shape which animals had passed by that morning. Every so often, we’d stop to listen: peacocks calling from somewhere unseen, or the sudden splash of a buffalo cooling off in the shallows.
The pace was relaxed—no rush at all. We could ask to pause for photos whenever something caught our eye (which happened a lot). Sunil shared stories about how elephants here are protected and explained why some trees looked stripped bare (turns out, it’s from hungry tuskers). We even caught sight of a flash of blue as a kingfisher darted past. By the end, my camera roll was full and my shirt smelled faintly of dust and sunblock—a small price for getting this close to Sri Lanka’s wild side.
