The experience

The tour starts at 10:30 am with a walk through the village, where your guide introduces you to the rhythms of daily life. Within fifteen minutes you're in an oxen cart, the primary transport in these villages, heading toward an artificial reservoir. The cart ride ends at the water's edge, where you board a traditional catamaran for another fifteen minutes drifting through the wetlands. The area holds crocodiles, water monitors, cormorants and other waterbirds. You move slowly enough to actually see them. When the catamaran deposits you on a bank adjoining the paddy fields, you step directly into the seasonal cultivations that depend on Sri Lanka's monsoon rains.

The paddy walk shows you how these fields work in practice, not as a photograph. You return to the village for a half-hour cooking demonstration with a local who teaches traditional Sri Lankan methods, and gives you a chance to attempt a dish yourself. Lunch follows at 12:15 pm: a buffet of rice, six traditionally cooked curries, fresh fried fish, green salad and papadum, all cooked in clay pots over wood fires and served on woven trays lined with lotus leaves. This is not a restaurant approximation of village food. It is what the village eats.
