The experience
Sigiriya sits on the water, and this tour puts you on it. You board a catamaran, two canoes lashed to a deck, and a paddler propels you out onto the lake between the two rock formations. The deck seats up to six people comfortably, and you stay on it for the whole 90 minutes, watching the light change over the rocks and the water. There's no engine noise, no speed. The pace is set by the paddle and the birds.
The guide co-hosts with Thusitha, who has spent 15 years on these waters. He tells the story of King Kashyapa, who ruled from 473 to 491 AD and built his fortress on Sigiriya, and of the monks who occupied Pidurangala (the main temple in the 5th century) across the water. The two sites faced each other, and the guide walks through what happened between them. While he talks, you're looking for birds: about 40 species use this water, and you have binoculars and a bird identification guide to track them. The guide can help you note down names and behaviors as you spot them.
You choose the session that fits your day: sunrise at 5:30 a.m. or sunset at 4:30 p.m. Pickup and drop-off from your hotel are not included in the price, but the operator can arrange them on request for a separate fee paid on location. Life jacket, binoculars, bird guide, fresh fruit juice and biscuits come with your ticket. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The tour suits all fitness levels.

Is this one for you?The early start for sunrise (5:30 a.m.) or the late afternoon for sunset (4:30 p.m.) means you're on the water during the quietest hours, when birds are most active and the light is clearest on the rocks. The catamaran is paddled, not motorized, so the pace is slow and the experience stays peaceful even if you're sharing the deck with others.
