The experience
The day starts before dawn at your hotel in Bentota, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Beruwala or nearby areas. A private air-conditioned car picks you up and heads inland toward the central highlands, a journey that gives you time to settle in before the sites open. Your guide travels with you and handles the route, so you're not navigating or stopping to ask directions: the car moves straight through to Dambulla first.
Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temple sits 160 meters above the surrounding landscape, a complex of five separate caves carved into the rock face. Inside are roughly 150 Buddha statues and paintings, some of the most important religious art in Sri Lanka. The oldest images were created over 2,000 years ago when King Valagamba took refuge here. Later kings, including King Nissanka Malla, gilded the interiors and added new artwork, earning the place the name Ran Giri, Golden Rock. The overall effect is coherent despite centuries of additions, and your guide walks you through the history as you move through the caves.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress comes next. The palace and fortress complex rises 370 meters above the surrounding landscape on a massive rocky plateau between Dambulla and Habarana. Locals call it the Eighth Wonder of the World. The site includes remnants of a ruined palace, fortifications, gardens, ponds, canals and fountains. The gardens themselves are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. Climbing the rock takes physical effort, but the view from the top and the scale of the engineering required to build a palace on this plateau make it clear why it's one of Sri Lanka's most visited sites. You'll also visit Sri Muththumari Amman Hindu Temple, a South Indian–style temple with ceremonial chariots used in the annual Theru festival. The Herbal Spice Garden is optional and can be added if you're interested.
The tour runs about 14 hours door-to-door. All site entrance fees are included, along with the private car, fuel, bottled water and WiFi on board. Your guide speaks English. Russian, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Tamil and Hindi-speaking guides can be arranged for an extra cost. Drop-off is back at your hotel or anywhere between the sites and your pickup point.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What's the climb like at Sigiriya Rock Fortress?
Sigiriya requires climbing a massive rocky plateau 370 meters above the surrounding landscape to reach the palace complex at the top. The climb is steep and involves stairs carved into the rock face, so a moderate level of physical fitness is needed. The view and the scale of the ancient engineering make it worth the effort, but it's not a casual walk.
How many Buddha statues are inside Dambulla Cave Temple?
Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temple holds roughly 150 Buddha statues and paintings spread across five separate caves. The oldest images were created over 2,000 years ago, and later kings added to and gilded the artwork over the centuries, so you're seeing layers of religious art from different periods of Sri Lankan history.
Does the tour include meals?
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are not included in the tour price. You'll want to bring snacks or plan to eat at a restaurant during the day, especially since the tour runs about 14 hours and starts before dawn.
Can I arrange a guide who speaks a language other than English?
Yes. Russian, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Tamil and Hindi-speaking guides can be arranged, but they cost extra. Let the operator know when you book if you need a different language.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?
The tour requires good weather. If it's canceled due to poor weather, you'll be offered a different date instead of a refund.
Is there a minimum number of people required to book?
A minimum of 2 people per booking is required. This is a private tour, so only your group participates: no strangers are added to fill seats.
