The experience
A private guide and driver pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Sigiriya, where you walk up to the top of the Lion Rock with a licensed guide who explains the site's history and archaeology as you go. The climb itself is the centerpiece. You move at your own pace on the stone staircase, past the ancient frescoes partway up, to the flat summit where the fortress once stood. The guide stays with you the whole way and answers questions about what you're seeing.
After Sigiriya, the tour moves to Dambulla Cave Temple, also called the Golden Temple, where the guide walks you through the cave chambers and their Buddha statues and murals. Then you stop at a working Herbal Spice Garden where you can see how cinnamon, cardamom and other spices grow and are harvested. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the driver provides bottled water and snacks during the day.
The tour includes optional visits to a batik and silk showroom (where women can try on a saree for photos at no extra cost), gem museums and wood carving workshops. You choose which ones interest you. There are no hidden fees or waiting charges. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language, depending on availability.

Choose it if you want to climb Sigiriya yourself with expert explanation rather than view it from a distance, and if you prefer a driver who knows the route and speaks your language over arranging transport on your own.
