The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the hiss of the burners—louder than I expected in the dark, before dawn near Sigiriya. We stood around clutching black tea, watching the crew wrestle these giant, colorful balloons awake. There was a smell of warm bread and bananas mixed with that slightly sweet grass you only get early in Sri Lanka. Our guide, Suresh, handed me a cup and grinned, “Don’t worry, it’s smoother than a tuk-tuk.” He wasn’t lying.
Lifting off felt like nothing at all—just suddenly not on the ground anymore. The sun cracked open behind Kandalama Lake and everything below turned gold for about five minutes. I kept looking for Sigiriya Rock Fortress; we couldn’t get too close (Suresh explained something about UNESCO rules), but seeing it rise out of the mist from this angle was… well, I still think about that view. We drifted over green rice fields and sleepy villages where kids waved up at us. Someone spotted a line of elephants far off—tiny gray shapes moving slow as clouds.
I tried to take photos but honestly gave up after a while because it felt better just to watch. There were parrots darting under us, and once we floated over a fisherman standing waist-deep in water waving his hat. Suresh pointed out Habarana in the distance—he joked that if we landed there he’d buy us all lunch (we didn’t). When we touched down, a couple of local guys helped pack up the balloon and poured us fruit juice while everyone swapped stories. There was champagne too but I stuck with juice; my hands were still shaking from excitement or maybe just from being up so early.
