The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to Dambulla Cave Temple, the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka and a World Heritage Site. The temple sits 148 kilometres east of Colombo and 72 kilometres north of Kandy in the central part of the country. From there, the route moves to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an ancient rock fortress dominated by a nearly 200-metre column of rock near the town of Dambulla. The climb itself is the main draw here: steep but shorter than Pidurangala.
Pidurangala Rock, located a few kilometres north of Sigiriya, is the third stop and the most demanding. The climb to the top takes about two hours and is more strenuous than Sigiriya. It suits travelers who are fit and want a challenge. The rock formation has a history closely tied to Sigiriya's, though there is less to see once you reach the summit. The tour ends with return transport to your hotel.
Bottled water is provided throughout the day. You'll travel by private vehicle with an English-speaking driver, and the full itinerary depends on which pickup location you choose at checkout: Kandy, Colombo, Negombo or Mount Lavinia hotels all have different routes and travel times built in.
