Sigiriya & Dambulla Day Tour: Climb Lion Rock & Safari
Climb an ancient fortress, explore sacred caves, and track wildlife in one morning and afternoon
A full-day tour from Kandy combines four distinct stops: the Matale Spice Garden, where you learn about cinnamon and cardamom; the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO site with 150+ Buddha statues and murals carved into rock; Sigiriya Lion Rock, where you climb to a 5th-century fortress summit for panoramic jungle views; and a guided jeep safari through the surrounding wilderness to spot elephants, deer, and exotic birds. An English-speaking guide leads the route in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Sigiriya and Dambulla highlights
- Visit Matale Herbal and Spice Garden
- Explore Dambulla Cave Temple
- Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock fortress
- Enjoy Jeep safari in Sigiriya wilderness
The experience
The day starts at the Matale Spice Garden, where a guide walks you through rows of cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, and medicinal plants used in Ayurveda. You'll see how spices are processed by hand and taste a fresh herbal tea before moving on. This stop sets up the rest of the itinerary: you're moving through Sri Lanka's interior, away from the coast, into the cultural and natural heart of the island.
Dambulla Cave Temple comes next: a UNESCO World Heritage site built into a hillside, with five rock-cut caves housing over 150 Buddha statues and ancient murals painted directly onto stone. The largest chamber holds a massive golden Buddha. The site sits high enough to give you views across the surrounding plains, and the scale of the carving work, done centuries ago without modern tools, becomes clear once you're inside. From there, you move to Sigiriya Lion Rock itself: a 200-meter rock column topped with the ruins of a 5th-century fortress. The climb is steep but manageable, passing through the famous Mirror Wall (polished stone that once reflected light) and between two massive stone lion paws at the entrance. At the summit, you stand in the remains of the palace, looking out over jungle and villages in every direction.
The jeep safari rounds out the day. Traveling through the wilderness around Sigiriya with an expert tracker, you move slowly enough to spot wildlife (elephants, sambar deer, crocodiles, and birds) in their natural habitat rather than in a zoo setting. The vehicle is open-sided, which means you're exposed to the landscape and the sounds of it. The whole tour runs eight hours from pickup in Kandy, and you'll need to bring or buy lunch separately, as meals are not part of the package.

Top questions
What is the Dambulla Cave Temple actually like when you walk inside?
Dambulla Cave Temple is a series of five interconnected rock-cut chambers carved into a single hillside, with over 150 Buddha statues ranging from small to life-sized, and ancient murals covering the walls and ceilings. The largest chamber holds a 14-meter golden Buddha. The air inside is cool and still, and the scale of the hand-carved work becomes obvious once you're standing in it.
How difficult is the climb up Sigiriya Lion Rock?
Sigiriya Lion Rock is a steep climb of roughly 200 meters, but the path is well-maintained with handholds and steps carved into the rock. Most visitors of average fitness complete it in 30 to 45 minutes. The final section passes between two massive stone lion paws before opening onto the summit ruins.
What kind of wildlife will I actually see on the jeep safari?
The safari targets elephants, sambar deer, crocodiles, and exotic birds in the wilderness around Sigiriya. Sightings depend on the season and time of day, and an expert tracker guides the vehicle to increase your chances, but wildlife spotting is never guaranteed.
Is lunch included in this tour?
Lunch is not included in the tour price. You'll need to arrange and pay for your own meal, though the guide can recommend options along the route.
Do I need to book entry tickets to Sigiriya and Dambulla separately?
Admission fees to Sigiriya Lion Rock and Dambulla Cave Temple are not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately at each site. Your guide will help you with the process when you arrive.
What time does the tour start and end?
The tour runs eight hours total, with pickup from your Kandy hotel included. Your guide will confirm the exact start time when you book, and you'll return to Kandy in the late afternoon.
