The experience

Sigiriya rock fortress is the most visited tourist attraction in Sri Lanka, built in the fifth century as a fortified palace complex under King Kassapa. The name comes from its palace entrance: a massive brick sculpture of a lion head, of which only the paws remain at the foot of the rock today. You climb the rock itself to explore the ruins and take in views across the surrounding landscape.

Dambulla golden rock cave temple sits on the other half of the day. The site has been a center of Buddhist practice since the first century BCE, when thousands of meditating monks made it their home. Today it holds a vast collection of Buddhist murals and sculptures in the pan-Asian artistic tradition, maintained through centuries of royal and monastic renovation. The cave temple was abandoned at intervals over time, yet each time the Buddhist elite restored it to draw pilgrims back.

You depart from your hotel in Bentota in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver. The tour runs 12 hours total. Mineral water is provided.
