Step-by-step itinerary
Full day safari in Yala National Park
- Start early morning safari
- Enter park with first jeeps
- Game drive for 5 to 7 hours
- Spot leopards, sloth bears, elephants
- Discuss special interests with driver
- Driver manages tour accordingly
The experience
The timing is everything on this safari. The operator recommends the full-day option because the first two hours after entering the park (when you arrive with the first few jeeps) are when leopards and other wildlife are most visible. You travel in a safari jeep with up to five other travelers, and your driver adjusts the route based on what you're hoping to find. If you want to focus on a particular animal or area, you tell the driver and he manages the day around it.
You get picked up from your hotel in Tissamaharama, Yala or Kirinda and driven to the park entrance. The jeep does all the moving. You sit back and scan the grassland and forest. The driver knows where to look and stops when something appears. A full day means you stay in the park long enough to cover different zones and see how the wildlife changes through the afternoon. Shorter options (4 hours or 7 hours) compress the same approach into a morning or morning-plus-early-afternoon window.
The park entrance fee (approximately 14,000 LKR per person) is separate from the tour price and paid on arrival. Bring water, sun protection and binoculars if you have them. The jeep is open-sided, so you get an unobstructed view but also full exposure to the sun and dust, dress accordingly.
What’s included
- Transport by safari jeep for up to six travelers.
- hotel pickup and drop-off in Tissamaharama, Yala or Kirinda.
- an experienced driver who also serves as tracker and adjusts the route based on your wildlife interests.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 11).
What's the best time of day to spot leopards in Yala?
The first two hours after the park opens are the most valuable for leopard sightings, which is why the operator emphasizes arriving early with the first jeeps. Wildlife is more active in the cooler morning hours.
Can I choose what animals to focus on during the safari?
Yes. You can discuss your interests with the driver before or during the tour, and he will adjust the route and stops to prioritize what you want to see, whether that's leopards, sloth bears, elephants or other wildlife.
How many people fit in one safari jeep?
A maximum of six travelers share one jeep, so you travel in a small group rather than a large coach.
Is the park entrance fee included in the tour price?

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the park, or is pickup included?
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if you're staying in Tissamaharama, Yala or Kirinda areas. Your driver collects you from your accommodation and returns you after the safari ends.
