Watch elephant herds gather where water shapes life in Sri Lanka’s dry zone

A three-hour safari through Gal Oya National Park near Batticaloa in a 4WD jeep with an experienced driver-tracker and bottled water included. The park's largest reservoir supplies year-round food and water, so elephant herds stay put instead of migrating. You can see them any season, and between March and July watch them swim between islets. The tour runs morning (6am) or evening (3pm) departures, with pickup from any location within 5km of the park gate. Entrance fees are optional at checkout.

The experience

The safari moves through the main catchment area of Senanayake Samudra, Sri Lanka's largest reservoir, in a multi-terrain 4WD vehicle built for the terrain. Your driver doubles as a tracker and guide, navigating the wilderness where 32 mammal species and over 150 bird species live: many of them on the small islets dotting the water. The park holds medicinal plants and herbs alongside the wildlife, and the landscape itself tells the history and legends of the region.

Elephants are the draw here, and unlike herds in other Sri Lankan parks, Gal Oya's don't migrate when the dry season hits. The reservoir keeps them fed and watered year-round, so you're not gambling on timing. Between March and July, the spectacle shifts: you'll watch the herds swim from islet to islet, a sight most safari-goers never see. Morning departures leave at 6am. Evening safaris start at 3pm. Both run three hours.

Pickup happens from any location within 5km of the park gate, and bottled water travels with you. You choose at checkout whether to add entrance fees to your booking or pay them in cash at the gate. The jeep holds up to six passengers, so you're either with a small group or booking private, depending on your option.

  • A 4WD safari jeep with an experienced driver-tracker.
