The experience
Nine to eleven hours door-to-door: your driver collects you from your Pasikuda hotel and takes you inland to Sigiriya, where a professional guide meets you at the base of the rock fortress. The climb itself is the centerpiece. A 200-meter ascent through the remains of a fifth-century palace, with the guide explaining the site's layout, the frescoes, and why UNESCO named it a world heritage site in 1982. After the climb, you walk through the Sigiriya Museum, which holds three decades of archaeological research on the site and is considered the most comprehensive in South Asia.
Lunch comes next at a standard restaurant where you choose between a Western buffet or Sri Lankan traditional dishes. Then a quick stop at an Ayurvedic spice garden for a walk around the grounds and a lesson in Sri Lankan spices: the kind of place tour groups pass through but few travelers seek out on their own. The garden sits between the cultural sites and the wildlife, so it breaks up the day without adding much time.
The final stretch is a 4X4 jeep safari through Kaudulla National Park, part of the Hurulu biosphere reserve. This is where you see Asian wild elephants in their habitat, along with bird species and other animals the guide points out. The jeep has a tracker, binoculars are provided, and fresh coconut and fruit come with you on the drive. Your driver then takes you back to Pasikuda as the afternoon ends.
