The experience

The tour runs fourteen hours from hotel pickup through the afternoon and into evening, giving you the full span of the day to move through Yala's ecosystems. Yala is Sri Lanka's second-largest national park and the most visited, and it harbours 44 recorded mammal species, including leopards at densities matched by few places on earth. The park also holds 215 bird species, six of them found nowhere else in Sri Lanka. Your guide navigates the trails in a Toyota Hilux jeep, stopping where wildlife appears and explaining what you're seeing as the day unfolds.

The jeep holds a maximum of six passengers, and bookings of five or more travel as a private group in a dedicated vehicle. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are water bottles and tea. Your guide speaks English and drives the jeep. The experience is built around what you spot and where the guide knows to look, not a fixed schedule of stops. The park's terrain and wildlife sightings shape the route each day.

Entrance tickets to Yala are not included and cost $37 per person. You pay them directly at the gate when you arrive. Infants can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized infant seat. The long day in an open jeep is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy, but it suits all other fitness levels.

Is this one for you?The fourteen-hour commitment fills most of your day, so plan this safari when you have nothing else scheduled. If you need a shorter wildlife experience or want to explore other parts of the region in the same day, a half-day tour would leave you more flexibility.
