The experience
The tour leaves Hambantota Port gate 02 in the early morning, around 7 or 8 am, and returns by 5 or 6 pm the same day. You ride in a comfortable safari jeep with an experienced driver who knows where the animals move through the park and has been guiding safaris since 2006. The jeep carries binoculars for each passenger, and the guide speaks English. Leopard sightings are the stated mission here (the operator has built the tour around finding them), but the park holds elephants, sloth bears, wild boar, spotted deer, mongooses, sambar deer, jackals, crocodiles and monkeys, plus jungle fowl, peacocks, eagles, kites, falcons, pelicans, kingfishers and hornbills.
A traditional Sri Lankan vegetarian lunch and bottled water are included during the day. The jeep and guide are yours for the full route through the park. Pickup and drop-off at Hambantota Port are part of the booking. Park entry is a separate ticket (13,000 LKR, card payment accepted) purchased on arrival.

Is this one for you?The early morning departure (around 7 or 8 am) is when leopards and other wildlife are most active in the park, so the timing is built into the tour itself rather than a choice you make. A full day in the jeep with one guide and driver suits travelers arriving at Hambantota Port with a free afternoon and evening to spend, or those with a port day between ship calls.
