The experience
The tour opens at Sigiriya Lions Rock, the ancient fortress carved into a 200-meter stone column that dominates the central plains. From there you move through Dambulla's cave temple complex before heading to Kandy, where two days of stops unfold around the city's Buddhist heritage and natural attractions. Your guide speaks English throughout and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle. The operator handles all transportation, parking and fuel.
Day two centers on Kandy itself. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage sits outside the city: a working conservation center where rescued Asian elephants walk freely and bathe in the river twice daily, and you watch from close range without barriers. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa, stands in the heart of Kandy's old royal complex. It remains one of Buddhism's most sacred sites and a window into Sri Lankan temple culture. An evening walk along Kandy Lake rounds out the city portion before you board the train toward Ella the following morning.
The Kandy-to-Ella train ride itself is the journey: a scenic climb through tea plantations and mountain passes that takes several hours. Once in Ella, hiking sessions take you to Little Adam's Peak and Rawana Waterfalls, both within reach of the town. You stay in 4-star hotels or villas on a bed-and-breakfast basis, with the operator managing check-in and offering a choice of properties from their accommodation chain. Hotel drop-off is available in selected cities at the end of the tour.

What is Sigiriya Lions Rock and why does the tour start there?
Sigiriya Lions Rock is an ancient fortress built into a 200-meter stone column in Sri Lanka's central plains, dating back over 1,500 years. The tour begins here because it is the most dramatic landmark in the region and sets the scale for the highlands you will travel through over the next two days.
Does the tour include entrance fees to the temples and attractions?
Entrance tickets are not included in the tour price and are booked separately. Your guide will help arrange them, but you pay the entry fees directly at each site.
What happens during the train ride from Kandy to Ella?
The Kandy-to-Ella train is a scenic journey through tea plantations and mountain passes that takes several hours. You travel by rail instead of vehicle, watching the landscape change as the train climbs toward Ella in the highlands. This is a signature part of the tour and not a transfer.
Is the guide available for the entire 2 days, or only for certain stops?
Your English-speaking guide travels with you throughout the 2 days in the private vehicle, accompanying you at each stop and providing commentary on the sites, culture and landscape.
