The experience
The route starts at Bandaranaike International Airport and heads inland to Sigiriya, where the first day covers Dambulla Cave Temple (a complex carved into rock in the first century BCE with five caves, painted ceilings and Buddha statues), and the UNESCO-listed rock fortress of Sigiriya itself. From there, the tour moves through the central highlands toward Kandy, stopping at Nalanda Gedige (an 8th-century stone temple), herbal and spice gardens, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most important pilgrimage sites. The guide speaks English, Italian or Russian depending on your preference, and the vehicle is air-conditioned with fuel, highway tolls and parking all included.
The highlands section includes Nuwara Eliya and the surrounding tea country: a tea factory visit, Gregory Lake, and Ramboda Falls (109 meters high). One day features a train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, passing the Demodara Bridge, a 1919 structure built to handle a nine-degree curve on steep terrain. From Ella, the itinerary includes a hike to Little Adam's Peak for views over the tea plantations and surrounding mountains, then moves south through Ravana Falls and Diyaluma Falls (220 meters, the second-highest in Sri Lanka) toward Yala.
Yala National Park offers a half-day safari in a separate jeep where leopards are a focus, along with other wildlife and birds. The coastal leg includes Mirissa beach and Coconut Tree Hill, with optional whale and dolphin watching (November to April season), traditional stick fishing, and visits to Galle Fort (a Portuguese and Dutch fortification from the 1600s on the southwest coast), and the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, where rescued turtles are cared for and released. The tour ends in Colombo or at the airport. Children from age 1 are welcome. Infant seats are available. Meals are not included, so you'll choose where and what to eat each day.
