The Experience

The e-bike wouldn't turn on at first. Our guide, Carlos, laughed and tapped the battery twice — it's a small thing, but it's the kind of moment that makes you realize you're not on some polished tour bus route. We were starting at the Serranos Towers, one of the original medieval gates that used to guard the old city, and the plan was to ride the length of the Turia Riverbed Gardens, which is basically nine kilometers of what used to be a river that flooded too much, so Valencia paved it over and turned it into the largest urban park in Spain. The e-bike made it easier than I expected — you still pedal, but the motor helps when the path gets steep or when you're tired, which meant we could actually stop and look at things instead of just grinding through.

The Turia path itself is strange in the best way. You're riding through the middle of the city, but there are tropical trees everywhere, old Roman ruins tucked into corners, and then suddenly you pass the Palace of Music or spot Park Gulliver's enormous sculpture hands rising out of the grass. Carlos pointed out how the city had basically reclaimed this dead space and made it into something people actually use — families on weekends, runners in the morning, couples at sunset. It doesn't feel like a tourist attraction so much as a place where locals happen to live their lives, and you're just riding through it. The City of Arts and Sciences comes up about halfway through, and yeah, it's the sci-fi-looking complex everyone photographs, all white curves and glass, but seeing it from the bike path instead of standing in front of it gives you a different angle on why people think it's worth the trip.

After the Arts and Sciences, the route opens up toward the beach, and the air changes — you can smell salt and feel the wind shift. We stopped at the Valencian beach itself, which is where the ride gets quieter. The Royal Gardens are at the other end, and by that point you've basically seen the whole spine of modern Valencia in one afternoon without having to figure out buses or parking or any of that. The water bottle they give you gets used — it's a small detail, but on a bike in the sun it matters. The whole thing takes a few hours depending on how many stops you make, and because it's private, Carlos could adjust the pace when someone wanted to linger or move faster through a section.
