Learn to ride waves with an instructor in the water beside you

A 2.5-hour group surf class in Playa de Las Américas with a maximum of 4 people per certified instructor, held daily for beginners and advanced surfers of all ages. The lesson starts with technique on the beach (stance, paddling, takeoff, safety), then moves into the water where you practice with an instructor alongside. Surfboard, neoprene and booties are provided. The class ends with stretching, shower, water, juice and a snack back at the school. Photographs of your session are included.

The experience

Classes run 2.5 hours and start at the school on Mexico Street, 30 meters from the beach in Playa de Las Américas. The first part happens on the sand: your instructor walks through the fundamentals. How to position yourself on the board, how to paddle out, how to catch and ride a wave, and what the safety rules are. This is where the technique sticks before you get wet.

After a short warm-up, you move into the water with your instructor. This is the part that matters: someone certified by the Canarian Surf Federation stays with you the whole time, helping you into waves and coaching you through the takeoff. The group stays small: no more than 4 people per instructor, and if your group is bigger, the school brings in a second guide so the instruction doesn't thin out. Children from age 6 are welcome, and the class suits all fitness levels.

When you come back to shore, you stretch for a couple of minutes, then head to the school for a shower. Water, juice and a snack are waiting. You'll get photographs from the session before you leave. Instructors speak English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language, so language is not a barrier.

What do I actually learn in a 2.5-hour surf class?

Do I need to bring my own surfboard and wetsuit?

No. Surfboards, neoprene wetsuits and booties are all provided as part of the class. You just need to bring yourself and a towel if you prefer your own.
