Playa de las Américas Surfing Lesson: One-to-One Instruction

You spend two hours in the water with one instructor, not in a group lineup.

A private surfing lesson at Playa de las Américas pairs you with a single instructor for a two-hour session that includes theory, hands-on practice in the water, and photo analysis of your technique afterward. The lesson is taught in English, Spanish, Russian or Latvian, and all equipment (wetsuit, surfboard and reef booties) is provided. Children from age 6 are welcome.

The experience

The lesson starts on land with theory, then moves into the water for two hours of practical instruction. Your instructor works with you alone, adjusting the pace and focus to what you're picking up rather than managing a group. The school operates at Playa de las Américas, which they describe as the best learning spot on the island. After you're done in the water, you'll review photos of your session so you can see what your body was actually doing on the board.

Wetsuit, surfboard and reef booties are all included, so you arrive with nothing but your swimsuit. The lesson is available in English, Spanish, Russian or Latvian. Public transportation stops are nearby if you're not driving. Children can start from age 6, though the school notes that the activity isn't suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns that would make paddling and balance difficult.
