The Experience

The tour starts with an express ferry from Tarifa across the Strait to Tangier. Your driver and guide are waiting at the port to collect you, then you settle into the air-conditioned minivan for the day's route through the city and its surroundings. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or Portuguese, and walks you through Tangier's history, culture and the daily life of its residents as you move between stops.

You begin at Cape Spartel, where the lighthouse marks the northern entrance to the Strait and the view opens onto the meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. From there you head to the Caves of Hercules, where the sea entrance is known as "The Map of Africa"—a natural formation believed to have been carved by the Phoenicians, visible in that shape when viewed from the water. A camel ride follows along the Atlantic Coast before you reach Perdicaris Park, named after an American businessman kidnapped there in 1904; the park is now the first American public property outside the United States and marks the historical ties between Morocco and the U.S.

The Medina's Petite Socco—once one of Morocco's greatest markets—is next, where you walk the charming streets past colorful craftsman shops and cafes that once served writers, diplomats and businessmen. Lunch is a tagine meal in town. You finish at the Kasbah, a complex of castles on a hilltop overlooking the city, built by the Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century; the Kasbah Museum is included in your entry. Coffee or tea rounds out the afternoon before the return ferry to Tarifa.
