The Experience

The first thing I noticed stepping out near the school was the salty breeze—warm, but not too much, just enough to wake you up. Our instructor, Diego, greeted us with a grin and a quick rundown of what to expect. He handed out wetsuits that still smelled faintly of the ocean and sunscreen (I’d forgotten mine, but he had extra). The boards were lined up outside, waxed and ready. You could hear the gulls squabbling overhead while we squeezed into our gear.

We piled into their van—six of us, all a bit nervous—and drove just ten minutes to a spot Diego called “the mellow break.” He explained why this beach works for beginners: soft sand underfoot, gentle waves rolling in sets. The lesson started right there on the sand with some awkward pop-up practice (I definitely fell over once or twice). Diego watched each of us and gave little tips in Spanish and English—he switched between both so everyone understood.

Once we hit the water, things got real. The Atlantic felt cool at first but you forget it fast when you’re paddling hard. I caught my first wave after maybe twenty tries—stood up for two seconds before splashing down, but hey, it counts! Diego cheered from behind and even pointed out a local café on the shore where we could grab coffee later. By the end of four hours, arms tired and hair full of salt, I was grinning like an idiot.
