The Experience

The beach appears through the windscreen, golden and wide, the Atlantic rolling in steady lines. Your instructor pulls up to whichever break is working that morning—the course adapts to what the ocean is doing, not the other way around—and you step out with a board that's designed to forgive mistakes. For the next four hours, you're in a group of no more than six, which means someone is watching you the whole time you're in the water. That matters when you're learning to read the ocean.

The practical part runs about 90 minutes to two hours in the water, and it covers the things that actually separate a beginner who can stand up from one who can do it again. Positioning on the board, how to paddle without exhausting yourself, the take-off itself—that moment when the foam lifts you—how to manage your weight so you don't pearl-dive, how to turn on the soft stuff, and the marine knowledge that keeps you safe: reading the conditions, understanding where the current is pulling, knowing when to paddle out and when to wait. Your instructor builds this in layers, not all at once, so it sticks.

You need to be able to swim and in decent general health—nothing extreme, just honest about your fitness. The minimum age is six, and kids often learn faster than adults because they're not thinking about falling. The course includes all the equipment: a board that floats you, a wetsuit if the water is cool, and a leash so your board doesn't drift away. Transport picks you up from your location and brings you back, so you don't have to navigate to the beach or worry about parking. The beach itself changes depending on the swell and wind that day—sometimes it's one spot, sometimes another—because the goal is to put you in the best conditions to learn, not to stick to a fixed location.
