The experience

The guide was five minutes late, which somehow made the whole thing feel real. We stood under the purple umbrella near the Immaculate statue, a cluster of maybe twenty people, and when she arrived she didn't apologize. Just started walking and talking, pointing out the tile work on a random building as we headed toward the Royal Alcázar. That kind of thing matters when you're in a group of thirty. The Alcázar itself is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe, which is the kind of fact that doesn't land until you're actually inside it: surrounded by courtyards and gardens and tapestries that have been there for centuries. You pass through plazas and along alleys that feel separate from the rest of the city, quieter somehow.
