Four and a half hours covers the Altamira Museum, its neocave (a replica of the famous UNESCO-protected cave), and the medieval village of Santillana del Mar itself. You start at the museum with a guided visit to the neocave, where the regular tour runs in Spanish but your guide can translate into English if you want. The neocave holds the replicated paintings and engravings from the original cave, so you see the art without the restrictions that protect the actual site.

Santillana del Mar is one of Spain's best-preserved medieval villages, and you get free time to walk its stone streets, look into shops, and absorb the place at your own pace. The Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, a Romanesque jewel, sits in the village if you want to step inside. It's not mandatory. A short stop at the Museum of Jesús Otero, a local sculptor's work, rounds out the morning.
