The experience
You leave Santander at 9:30 am and travel by air-conditioned minivan to Comillas, arriving with time to start the guided walk. The centerpiece is the Capricho de Gaudí, one of the few buildings the famous Catalan architect designed outside Catalonia: a modernist mansion that anchors the morning. Your guide walks you through it with the entrance fee already covered, then moves to the Old Major Seminary, a majestic building by architects Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Joan Martorell that stands as one of the most important works of Catalan modernist architecture. The seminary's church is still under renovation but worth seeing.
The tour then takes in the modernist cemetery (built over an original church), Sobrellano Palace with its neogothic style, and a modernist fountain by Domènech i Montaner. You'll stop at the small fishing port of Comillas, originally built by hand and once a major whale-fishing hub two centuries ago. A 17th-century church representing montañés gothic style rounds out the walking portion of the town center. The whole day wraps by 2:30 pm, leaving you back at your hotel or the Pabellón de la Habana Vieja in Torrelavega.
Groups max out at eight people, so the pace stays manageable and the guide can answer questions without rushing. The minivan is air-conditioned and pickup is from your hotel in Santander or from Torrelavega if that's more convenient. A live guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian depending on the group.
