The Experience
The day starts with a 90-minute drive from your hotel to Setenil de las Bodegas, a village where houses are built directly into overhanging rock faces—some rooms carved into the stone itself. You walk through its narrow white streets for about 50 minutes, seeing how the settlement has occupied this gorge for over 5,000 years. Then it's a 30-minute drive to Ronda, perched on a deep ravine cut by the Guadalevín river.
In Ronda, a local guide leads you through the old town and across the New Bridge (Puente Nuevo), built between 1751 and 1793 to connect the newer city with the medieval quarter. From the bridge you look down into the Tajo gorge, a chasm more than 100 meters deep. You pass under the Felipe V gate and reach the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, one of Spain's oldest and most monumental bullrings. The guide walks you into the arena itself, explaining the history of bullfighting, then takes you through the museum—a collection of paintings by Goya and other 17th- to 19th-century artists, along with costumes, bronzes and ceremonial objects tied to the tradition. After the guided portion, you have an hour to explore Ronda's center on your own before the 90-minute return drive to your hotel.
Pickup is available from Málaga, Torremolinos or Benalmadena. Some options include a wine tasting; on Tuesdays, the bullring and museum tickets are not part of the tour, so confirm your departure day when booking.

What exactly is the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza and why is it worth seeing?
The Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain and one of the most architecturally significant. Your guide takes you into the arena itself and through the museum, which holds paintings by Goya and other artists from the 17th to 19th centuries, plus ceremonial costumes and bronzes—a collection that traces the roots of bullfighting in Spanish culture.
How much time do I spend walking, and is it strenuous?
You walk through Setenil's streets for about 50 minutes and then follow a guided route through Ronda's old town and across the New Bridge. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, and you have an hour of free time in Ronda's center to rest or explore at your own pace.
Can I see the bullring if I book a Tuesday departure?
On Tuesdays, the tour does not include tickets to the Plaza de Toros or the bullfighting museum. If seeing the bullring is important to you, choose a different day of the week.
What is Setenil de las Bodegas, and why are the houses built into rock?
Setenil is one of the most important white towns in the province of Cádiz, where the settlement has occupied a gorge for more than 5,000 years. Houses are built directly into overhanging rock cliffs—some rooms carved into the stone itself—which provides natural shelter and has shaped the village's unique character.
How deep is the Tajo gorge that Ronda sits on?
The Tajo gorge is more than 100 meters deep, carved by the Guadalevín river. The New Bridge, built in the 18th century, spans this chasm and connects Ronda's newer city with the old medieval quarter; from the bridge you can see down into the ravine.
What languages does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English, Spanish or French, depending on the group composition.
