The Experience

The tour starts with a bus pickup from Córdoba that takes you to the Medina Azahara parking lot. From there, a shuttle carries you up to the archaeological site itself—the palace complex of Medina Azahara, built in the 10th century and now spread across terraced ruins. An official guide accredited by the Junta Andalucía meets you at the site and leads the walk through the remains, explaining what you're standing in front of: the layout of the royal palace, the scale of what once stood there, the details that survive. The guide's job is to help you read the site, not just point at it.

After the guided walk, you move through the virtual reality projection room—a way to see what the palace looked like when it was whole. Then the shuttle takes you back down to the parking lot, and the bus returns you to Córdoba. The whole experience runs between 2.5 and 3 hours from start to finish. Children from age 1 are welcome, and strollers work on the tour; service animals are allowed. The site is suitable for all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health because of the walking involved.

Transport, site entry, the shuttle rides, the interpretation center access and the virtual reality room are all included. You'll need to bring your own food and drinks—nothing is provided on the tour itself. An official Spanish-speaking guide leads the whole experience, so the interpretation happens in Spanish.
