The experience

The wooden train leaves Palma and climbs into the Sierra de Alfabia, a route that has carried travelers since the line opened over a century ago. The train passes through tunnels carved into steep mountains, past olive and orange groves, and across viaducts that open onto views of the Sóller Valley. This is not a modern tourist train retrofitted with old styling: the wooden carriages and the route itself are original, and the journey moves at the pace of the landscape it crosses.

Once in Sóller, you step onto the main square to see the church of San Bartolomé and the Banco de Sóller building, both designed by Joan Rubió, a student of Gaudí, with modernist stone work and a carved rose window. The square sits where 19th-century merchants who made fortunes trading oranges to France built their colonial-style manor houses and palaces. A guide in your language walks you through this part of town, pointing out the architecture and the history written into the streets.

The tram then takes you from Sóller down to Puerto de Sóller, a natural port surrounded by mountains. The harbor has a maritime history. It was a commercial center and a target for pirates and smugglers because of its location in the Sierra de Tramuntana. The return to Palma happens by road, so you see a different route back. The whole day runs five hours from start to finish.
