Eight and a half hours means you leave early and return in the evening, which is what lets the day hold three distinct landscapes without rushing through any of them. The morning starts in Valldemossa, a village 17 kilometers from Palma that has stayed largely unchanged despite its proximity to the capital—steep cobbled streets lined with flowerpots, surrounded by olive trees and almond groves in the Serra de Tramuntana. You wander the village before it fills with day-trippers, then drive the coastal mountain roads toward Sóller, a town known for its modernist architecture designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver, a student of Gaudí. The neo-Gothic church of San Bartomeu and the modernist bank anchor the historic center; narrow streets open onto what the Archduke Luis Salvador once called the most beautiful square on the island.

In the afternoon, you board the centenary tramway that connects Sóller to Port of Sóller six kilometers away. From the port, a boat carries you along the northern coast, where the Sierra de Tramuntana rises directly from the water—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route passes the Torrent de Pareis and arrives at Sa Calobra, a natural inlet ringed by majestic cliffs and clear water. The return journey follows the Calobra road, an engineering feat of switchbacks that climbs away from the coast and offers some of the most dramatic sea and mountain views on the island.
