The Experience

The boards are already lined up on the sand when you arrive, and your guide is running through the basics—feet shoulder-width apart, knees soft, paddle grip loose. Within ten minutes you're upright and moving, which is faster than you'd think. The introductory class happens right there in the shallows of Cala Ratjada, so there's no sitting in a classroom or watching a video; you get on the board and learn by doing, with the guide staying close enough to correct your weight or your stroke.

Once you've got the rhythm, the tour moves out along the coast. The water is clear enough that you see the bottom, and the cliffs rise up behind you in that particular Mallorca shade of rust and gold. Your guide points out where to paddle next, and you stop at spots that are too small or too rocky to reach any other way—places where the snorkeling is actually worth the effort.
