The experience

We rolled out from the shop just off Plaza de la Merced, helmets a bit crooked, still laughing about my first wobbly try. Our guide (Javi, who grew up here) showed us how to stand steady on the Segway. I was nervous at first, but after a minute or two gliding in circles, it felt almost…floaty? The city noise faded as we zipped up toward the Alcazaba. You could smell oranges somewhere: maybe from that little tree near the curb. Javi pointed out some graffiti I’d have missed. He said it changes every month.

The climb up to Gibralfaro Castle was easier than I expected (Segways are sneaky like that). Suddenly we were above the rooftops, breeze in our faces. I remember pausing for a second. There was this hazy blue light over Malaga’s port and you could hear gulls echoing off the stone walls. Javi told us how his grandfather used to bring him up here for picnics before the tourists came. I tried to imagine it quieter, but honestly, even now it felt kind of peaceful.

On the way back down we wove through narrow streets. Someone shouted “guapo!” at our group and we all cracked up (I think they meant the Segways, not us). We stopped again in Plaza de la Merced where Picasso’s statue sits watching everyone go by. My feet tingled when I finally stepped off. Guess you get used to moving without walking. Still thinking about that view above the city though…might have to come back just for that.
