I thought I knew Madrid. But stepping into Malasaña with our guide, Ana, was like walking into a different city—graffiti peeling under my fingers, the smell of old tobacco and churros mixing in the air. We started near those old cinemas on Gran Vía; someone was playing Bowie from a window above us. Ana handed around some battered flyers from the ’80s—real ones, not reprints—and suddenly it wasn’t just history. It felt like we were trespassing on someone else’s wild night out.

We wandered through Plaza del Dos de Mayo where teenagers lounged on the steps and an older man sold pirated CDs (yes, still). Ana pointed at a mural of Manuela Malasaña—“She was only 17 when they executed her,” she said quietly. I didn’t expect to feel that lump in my throat. The square buzzed with people but there was this odd hush for a second, maybe just in my head. And then you’re back in it: scooters zipping by, laughter spilling from terrace bars.

Chueca hit different. Rainbow flags everywhere but also something more subtle—a kind of ease in how people moved or hugged each other hello. We stopped at that little market (San Antón), grabbed a coffee on the terrace while Ana told us about Pedro Zerolo and how Pride here turned pain into celebration. I tried to pronounce “transformismo” right—Li laughed so hard she nearly spilled her drink. Honestly, I still think about that view over the rooftops at sunset.

By the end I had a list of places to eat and weird record shops to find later. The tour includes pickup if you need it, but honestly you’ll want to stay out after and just let yourself get lost for a bit.
