The Experience

Already wobbling a bit as we coasted into Plaza Mayor, I tried to keep up with our guide, Carlos—he had that relaxed Madrid energy, waving at café waiters like he knew half the city. The square was busier than I expected for a weekday morning: accordion music somewhere, the smell of coffee drifting out from under those red arcades. We paused by the bronze statue (King Philip III, apparently—I’d never have guessed), and Carlos told us about old bullfights and coronations here. I could almost hear the echoes if I closed my eyes. My legs were still getting used to the bike but it felt good to be moving.

We zigzagged through Puerta del Sol—so many people, so much noise—and then suddenly ducked into quieter corners like Plaza de la Villa. The air changed there; cooler, almost musty with old stone. I remember Carlos laughing when someone in our group asked about the bear statue (“el oso y el madroño,” he said, making us repeat it). He made sure we stopped for water near Atocha Station (the indoor garden is wild—palms and turtles right inside a train station?), and took photos for us without making it awkward. The Prado Museum looked grand even from outside; I’m not really an art person but seeing all those people lined up made me curious.

The best part was gliding into Retiro Park—suddenly everything was green and open after all those narrow streets. There were rowboats on the lake and couples dancing by the bandstand (not joking). The breeze smelled faintly of roses near the Rosaleda; it’s funny what sticks with you. We stopped at Cibeles Fountain too—the traffic swirling around felt like chaos but somehow beautiful? By then my legs were jelly but I didn’t want it to end just yet.

Carlos kept us moving but never rushed—he waited when someone lagged behind or wanted another photo by Alcalá Gate. It wasn’t perfect (I nearly crashed into a pigeon at Plaza de España), but maybe that’s what made it feel real. When we finally rolled up to the Royal Palace of Madrid, sunlight bouncing off marble and tourists everywhere, I realized how much ground we’d covered in just a couple hours. Still think about that first glimpse of Plaza de Oriente though—you know when something just feels bigger than you expected?
