The Experience

Itálica sits ten minutes from Seville's center and holds what most travelers come to see: the third-largest Roman amphitheater in the world, where you walk the arena floor and the vomitories—the passages where gladiators and animals entered. The city was the first Roman settlement built outside Italian territory and the birthplace of two emperors. You move through authentic Roman avenues, thermal baths, furnaces and a Roman theater, and the mosaics here are the most carefully preserved in Spain. The site also served as the Dragon Pit in Game of Thrones seasons 7 and 8, though the tour frames it as a Roman city first.

After Itálica, the route includes the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, a medieval fortress layered with Mudejar, Gothic and Baroque architecture. The interior holds paintings and sculptures of historical value, and the guide walks you through how the monks lived in the space. The monastery adds a different era to the morning—Roman grandeur, then medieval devotion.

Transport from central Seville is included, as are all entrance tickets and the guide's live commentary on the ride. The guide speaks your language—English, Spanish, French or Italian—and the group caps at eight people, which means you move through the sites without the crowds that larger tours bring.

Top questions

What exactly is Itálica and why is it called the Pompeii of Spain?

Itálica is a Roman city founded outside Italian territory, home to emperors Trajan and Hadrian. It earned the Pompeii comparison because of its state of preservation—the mosaics are the most carefully conserved in Spain, and the Roman structures (avenues, thermal baths, amphitheater, theater) remain intact enough to walk through and understand how the city functioned.

Can I actually walk inside the Roman amphitheater at Itálica?

Yes. The tour includes access to the arena floor and the vomitories—the passages where gladiators and animals entered. It is the third-largest Roman amphitheater in the world, and you move through the structure itself rather than viewing it from outside.

Is this tour really about Game of Thrones, or is that just marketing?

Itálica was the filming location for the Dragon Pit in Game of Thrones seasons 7 and 8, and the tour acknowledges that. The focus, though, is the Roman history—the emperors, the architecture, the mosaics. If you are interested in the show, you will recognize the location; if you are not, the Roman city is the main event.

How long does the tour take and what is included?

The tour runs four hours total. Included are transport from central Seville, entrance tickets to both Itálica and the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, the official guide in your language, and live commentary during the ride in an air-conditioned vehicle.

What is the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo and why is it part of this tour?

San Isidoro del Campo is a medieval fortress built over centuries with Mudejar, Gothic and Baroque elements. It holds paintings and sculptures of historical and cultural significance, and the guide shows you how the monks lived in the space. It provides a second historical layer—medieval religious life—after the Roman sites.

How many people go on this tour and will I be with a large group?

Groups are capped at eight people maximum, so the tour stays small. This size means you move through Itálica and the monastery without the crowds that larger coach tours bring, and the guide can answer questions as you go.
