The experience

Itálica sits in Santiponce, just outside Seville, and was one of the most important Roman cities in Hispania. Founded in 206 BC, it grew especially under Hadrian, who expanded it into a major centre of the empire. The tour walks you through remarkably preserved streets and houses (including the House of Neptune and the House of the Birds), and past the amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Roman world. The mosaics here are what draw most visitors: intricate floors that survive in place, showing the wealth and craft of Roman society.

After Itálica, the route moves to the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, built in the 14th century and standing a short distance away in the same town. The monastery combines Gothic and Mudejar architecture with later Renaissance additions, and its churches, cloisters and decorated tombs reflect its role as a centre of religious and intellectual life. It was closely tied to the early Protestant movement in Spain, a history the guide will walk you through.

You meet the guide at one of three pickup points in central Seville (Calle Zaragoza, Calle Trajano or Calle Rastro), and depart in the morning. Transport to and from Itálica is included, as are all entry fees. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on the group.
