experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wonder why people in Granada seem to linger over meals so long? I didn’t really get it until our tapas & wine tour through the old town. We started near the Royal Chapel — I could hear bells echoing off the stone, mixing with chatter from tiny bars. Our guide, Marta, waved us into this grocery shop that’s apparently been around since before my country even existed. It smelled like walnuts and dried figs, and the owner sliced jamón with this slow, practiced rhythm. I tried to say “thank you” in Spanish; pretty sure it came out wrong but he just grinned.

I was surprised by how relaxed everything felt. We’d wander a few blocks (dodging scooters and grandmas pulling carts), then duck into another spot for a glass of something local — one white wine tasted almost salty, which Marta said comes from the nearby mountains. The tapas weren’t fancy: olives, little fried fish, bread rubbed with tomato. But eating them where locals do makes them hit different somehow. At one family-run place, we squeezed onto stools while Marta explained why Granada still gives free tapas with drinks — she said it’s tradition and pride both.

By the time we sat down for our last round (I lost count of how many stops), I could feel that warm buzz you get from good food and stories shared with strangers who don’t stay strangers for long. The light outside had turned gold on the old buildings. I still think about that view down a narrow alley as we finished dessert wine — not sure if it was the sherry or just Granada itself making me feel like I belonged for a second.
