The Experience
You’re suddenly weaving through Albaicín on an electric bike, which honestly feels a bit like cheating but I’m not complaining. Our guide—Miguel, who grew up here—keeps calling out little stories about the old Moorish walls and the way the light hits the cobbles at this hour. There’s this faint smell of orange blossom everywhere, mixed with something smoky from someone’s lunch window. I nearly missed a turn because I was staring up at laundry flapping over the alley.
We stopped at Plaza Nueva just as a street guitarist started playing some wild flamenco chords. Miguel grinned and said you can’t really plan these moments; they just happen in Granada. The electric bikes make climbing up to San Nicolás Viewpoint weirdly easy (I’d have died walking it), so when we got there I wasn’t even out of breath—just kind of stunned by that view over the Alhambra with Sierra Nevada behind it. It’s busy but everyone falls quiet for a second. You hear birds and distant church bells and then someone laughs too loud and it feels normal again.
I didn’t expect to love the tapas break as much as I did. We sat outside in Sacromonte, legs stretched out, cold soda sweating on the table. The tortilla was still warm and salty, and Miguel tried to teach me how to order “jamón” properly—I failed but he laughed anyway. Some local kids were chasing each other past our terrace, shouting something I couldn’t catch. After that we coasted down Paseo de los Tristes along the riverbank—honestly one of Spain’s prettiest streets—and I kept thinking how different Granada looks from a bike seat compared to wandering on foot.
The last climb up to San Miguel Alto felt like flying—wind in your face, city spread out below—and even though my hands were sticky from orange juice and sunscreen, I didn’t care. There’s something about seeing all those white Carmen houses tucked into green gardens that sticks with you longer than you’d think.
