The experience

The tour starts at Paseo de los Tristes, the street that gives access to the Alhambra and runs along the River Darro. From there, the electric bike carries you uphill into the Albayzin: the old Arab quarter that once held forty thousand people, thirty mosques, and luxurious carmenes (traditional houses with gardens) built during the height of Nazarid rule. The narrow streets and small plazas are still there. The electric motor means you can ride them instead of walking. Your guide points out the remnants of public baths like the Banuelo and explains how the quarter became a refuge for Muslims after the reconquest, a role it still holds in Granada's identity.

From the Albayzin, the route climbs to Sacromonte, the district on Valparaiso hill that borders the northeast side of the Arab quarter. In the 15th century, Roma families, the Gitanos, carved cave homes into the hillside, and those houses are what Sacromonte is known for. The hill itself was declared holy because people believed the caves held the remains of San Cecilio, Granada's patron saint. "Sacromonte" means holy mountain. You stop to photograph the cave dwellings and take in the views back toward the Alhambra, especially at sunset when the light hits the palace across the valley.
